Lagna Calculator — Your Ascendant by Date of Birth
Your lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth — the first house your whole kundli is read from. It needs an accurate birth time.
What is your lagna (ascendant)?
Your lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth. It becomes the first house of your kundli and fixes which sign rules every other house, so the whole chart is read from it. Its ruling planet, the lagnesh, is one of the most important planets in the chart.
The lagna moves fast: a new sign rises roughly every two hours, and the rising degree advances about one degree every four minutes. That makes both the birth time and the birth place — which sets the local horizon — essential. If your recorded time is uncertain and the lagna degree is close to 0° or 30°, the rising sign itself may be in doubt; the calculator warns you when it is within 1° of a boundary.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my lagna by date of birth?
Enter your date, exact time and place of birth. The calculator computes the sidereal (Lahiri) sign rising on the eastern horizon at that moment — your lagna — with its degree, ruling planet and nakshatra.
What is the difference between lagna, rashi and Sun sign?
The lagna is the sign rising at birth (the first house), the rashi is the sign the Moon was in, and the Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in. Vedic astrology reads the chart mainly from the lagna and the Moon; the Western “zodiac sign” is the tropical Sun sign.
Why does birth time matter so much for the lagna?
A new sign rises about every two hours, so even a small error in birth time shifts the lagna degree — and near a sign boundary it can change the lagna itself. Use the time on your birth certificate or hospital record if you can.
What is a lagnesh?
The lagnesh (lagna lord) is the planet that rules your rising sign — Mars for Aries or Scorpio, Venus for Taurus or Libra, Mercury for Gemini or Virgo, and so on. Its placement and strength say a lot about health, temperament and the direction of life.
