What is a Panchang?

A panchang is the classical Hindu almanac. The word means “five limbs” — the five elements that define a day in Vedic timekeeping: tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon’s constellation), yoga and karana. Together they describe the astrological quality of the day and the auspicious and inauspicious windows within it.

The tithi tracks the Moon’s phase, the nakshatra shows which of the 27 lunar mansions the Moon occupies, the yoga and karana are derived from the Sun–Moon relationship, and the vara is the weekday with its planetary ruler. This page also lists the day’s key muhurtas — auspicious windows such as Abhijit, and inauspicious ones such as Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal.

Every value here is computed for Amsterdam’s exact latitude, longitude and timezone using the Swiss Ephemeris, so the sunrise, sunset and every timing are correct for your location rather than a generic table. Use the auspicious windows to begin important work, and avoid Rahu Kaal and the other inauspicious periods.

What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is a roughly 90-minute inauspicious window each weekday ruled by Rahu. Tradition avoids starting important new work during it; the exact local time depends on sunrise and varies by city.
