What is your rashi (Moon sign)?

In Vedic astrology your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment of your birth — your janma rashi or chandra rashi. It is the sign used for daily rashifal, Sade Sati, kundli matching and most transit (gochar) readings, because the Moon signifies the mind and day-to-day experience. This calculator works it out from your date, time and place of birth in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa.

Your Vedic rashi is often different from the “star sign” in Western horoscopes. That sign is your Sun sign in the tropical zodiac; the rashi is your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24° behind the tropical one. The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, so if you were born close to a change your birth time decides the rashi — enter it as accurately as you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my rashi by date of birth?

Enter your date, time and place of birth above. The calculator finds the sign the Moon was in at that moment in the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac — that sign is your rashi, or janma rashi.

Is my rashi the same as my zodiac sign?

Usually not. The zodiac sign in Western horoscopes is your Sun sign in the tropical zodiac. Your Vedic rashi is your Moon sign in the sidereal zodiac, so the two often differ.

Can I find my rashi without an exact birth time?

Often, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for about two and a quarter days, so on most dates the rashi is the same whatever the time. If you were born on a day the Moon changed sign, the time decides it — use your best estimate and treat the result as provisional. The calculator warns you when the Moon was within 1° of a sign boundary.

What is my rashi used for?

Your rashi is the basis of daily and yearly rashifal, Sade Sati and Dhaiyya (Saturn’s transits over the Moon), Chandrabala in choosing a muhurat, and the Moon-sign factors (such as Bhakoot) in kundli matching.
